Watch for a Lunar Eclipse.

On the evening of January 20th, the Moon will pass completely through the shadow of the Earth and change from a bright full moon to a dark coppery red. The colour is caused by the red part of the spectrum (rainbow) reaching the Moon. If you were on the Moon, the Earth would look like it was surrounded by a glowing ring. Way Cool!

The action begins at 10:02 pm. At 11:44, the Moon will be completely in the shadow. Totality lasts 78 minutes. Then the shadow begin to leave and the show is over at 1:25 am. It is late, but it is worth it if it's clear.

The final year of the millennium starts out with a total lunar eclipse of the Moon and ends with a partial eclipse of the Sun on Christmas day, 2000. It's going to be an interesting year for astronomy, so stay tuned.
