| When the Earth, the Moon and the Sun all line
up just right with the Moon in the middle, the Sun will be blocked out
for few minutes by the Moon and a shadow will go accross the Earth. But
the shadow is skinny and not everyone gets to see totality.
People not in the eclipse path can see a partial eclipse. That is when
the Sun looks like a bite has been taken out of it. On August 14, 1999,
a total eclipse can be seen across Europe and the Middle East. In Ottawa,
a very small partial eclipse can be seen at sunrise.

NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY
AT THE SUN
EVEN DURING AN ECLIPSE! |
Always wear #14 welder glasses when viewing the Sun or poke a pinhole
in a card and let the sun's light project through it onto a white piece
of paper to see the Sun. |
Interesting fact:
The ancient Chinese told stories of a giant celestial dragon eating
the Sun bite by bite during a solar eclipse. |
